Shadowman Comic Book Optioned

October 12, 2012 Valiant Entertainment and “The Mummy” producer Sean Daniel have hired comics writer and “Babylon 5” creator J. Michael Straczynski to pen a live-action adaptation of the publisher’s newly revived “Shadowman” series, Deadline reports.

Created in 1992 by Jim Shooter, Steve Englehart, David Lapham and Bob Layton, “Shadowman” centers on Jack Boniface, a man who must embrace the legacy he was born into and protect New Orleans from the forces of darkness that want to claim the city as their own. The relaunched title, by Justin Jordan and Patrick Zircher, debuts next month.

“Shadowman is a character who lives in a unique world that mixes the modern world with that which is most ancient within us,” said Straczynski, who wrote the 2008 drama “Changeling.” “The New Orleans vibe and history, and the struggle to find a balance with the personality within him, is a perfect dramatic vehicle. We’ve already finished the outline and there’s a lot of action, much of it unique to what Shadowman can do … but at the core of it, there’s a strong character, world and mythology that can be explored across multiple subsequent films. This is gonna be fun.”

“Shadowman” is produced by Valiant’s Jason Kothari and Dinesh Shamdasani, and the Sean Daniel Company’s Daniel and Jason Brown, with Straczynski serving as the executive producer.

Sony Pictures optioned Valiant’s “Bloodshot” earlier this year.
