Shrapnel Comic Book Optioned

July 21, 2011 Radical Publishing already has their high concept sci-fi comic book Oblivion set up as a feature film at Universal under the title of Horizons with Tom Cruise signed to star and Tron Legacy director Joe Kosinski set to direct the film. Now the comic book company has just announced yet another adaptation of one of their properties as Variety reports their film production banner Radical Pictures has set Hilary Swank to star in and produce a feature film version of Nick Sagan and M. Zachary Sherman’s comic book trilogy Shrapnel. The futuristic story follows a former military officer who organizes a revolt on the planet Venus.

The project initially started as a graphic novel trilogy but has also expanded into mobile gaming with an iPhone game in the Apple App Store and another multiplayer game on the way soon. As for the film, Radical head Barry Levine says, “Hilary came to Radical excited to find a project with a strong female protagonist that could show off her abilities to do action films. With Hilary being an actor’s actor, Shrapnel will give a whole new definition to that type of role.” This will be the first major, high concept action film for Swank and could turn her into a real action star. The Mummy producer Sean Daniel is equally excited about the prospect saying, “Shrapnel takes core elements of classic Westerns and brings them into a futuristic epic. We are excited to be working with Hilary to create a cutting edge heroine for a new generation.”
